Malayalam actor Dileep on Saturday revealed that he has evaded payment of service tax, said central excise and service tax officials.

The over 12-hour raid that began on Saturday morning took place at multiple places, including his residence near Kochi, and offices that are into production and distribution.

A press statement issued by the central excise department said the raids were based on intelligence reports that the 45-year-old Dileep evaded payment of service tax by hiding details of his remuneration.

The statement said the actor takes only a small portion of his remuneration through cash or cheque, while the rest is channelised by taking over the distribution of his film.

The actor, who was reported to be in a shooting location in the city itself, however, did not turn up before the officials.

In the Malayalam film industry, Dileep is currently rated as the most sought after actor after the two superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal.

Beginning his career from behind the scenes by working as an assistant director to ace filmmaker Kamal, he is also a good mimic.

In the early 1990s, he started doing cameos and later he proved his mettle through films like "Sallapam" and "Punjabi House" to name a few.

In 2000 and 2002, blockbuster films like "Thenkasi Pattenem" and "Meeshamadhavan", Dileep scaled newer heights and has since then remained at the top.

He later married Malayalam actress Manju Warrier.

Support to AAP not unconditional: Congress

Senior Congress leader of Delhi Kiran Walia says there’s always scope for a rethink if AAP doesn’t deliver

Senior Congress leader of Delhi Kiran Walia told NDTV "we have said we will not bring down your government. But the support is not for always. There's always the scope for a rethink if they don't deliver."
Congress, after being routed in Delhi Assembly polls, had said it would be giving unconditional support to AAP to form the government.
AICC General Secretary and in-charge of Delhi, Shakeel Ahmed, had said "a number of senior leaders of Delhi are of the opinion that we should give unconditional support to AAP to form a government. They believe that we should extend outside support to it.
The Delhi polls threw up a fractured mandate with no party securing majority in the 70-member assembly and BJP emerging as the single largest party with 32 seats. BJP's ally Akali Dal has one MLA.
AAP has got 28 seats in the assembly followed by Congress' eight.
Despite emerging as the single largest party with 31 seats, BJP has declined the offer of the Lt Governor to form the government citing that it did not have the numbers.
The Lt Governor has already recommended that Delhi be put under President's rule with the new assembly in suspended animation among other options.
Meanwhile, AAP today held public meetings at around 80 places in the city to gauge the opinion of the people on formation of government with the "unconditional" support from Congress, the reponse for which so far has been in affirmative.
"I have held meetings in three places today and most of the people who attended said we should form the government. If the sentiment is same in all the wards, then respecting the people's verdict, we may form the government but the final decision would be taken only after Sunday," Manish Sisodia, MLA from Patparganj constituency, said after a meeting in Khichripur village.

South Africa vs India, 1st Test

India 8 wickets away from a historic win

  • Live photo blog: South Africa vs India, 1st Test (© AFP)

To give you a brief recap of the day, India started the day at 284 for 2 with ton-up Pujara and Kohli going strongly at the crease. After adding a few more runs to the total, Pujara departed on 153, while Kohli soon followed him, missing out on his second ton of the Test by just 4 runs.
However, with the exception of Dhoni (29) and Zaheer Khan (29) the Indian middle and lower order couldn’t make a big contribution as they were bowled out for 421, setting SA a final target of 458.
Petersen and Smith provided the hosts with a steady start as they put up a 100-run stand for the opening wicket. However, Smith was run out on 44 and Hashim Amla fell cheaply on 4 towards the end of the day, putting India back in the driving seat in this game.
The hosts will look at their middle-order, hoping that they play out the final day to save this Test match.
Do join us again at 1:30 pm tomorrow for all the updates and the best pictures from day 5 of the first Test. Till then, good night!

(Costliest hurricane in US.[2])

Part of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season
Hurricane Katrina was the deadliest and most destructive Atlantic tropical cyclone of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season. It was the costliest natural disaster, as well as one of the five deadliest hurricanes, in the history of the United States. Among recorded Atlantic hurricanes, it was the sixth strongest overall. At least 1,833 people died in the hurricane and subsequent floods, making it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane; total property damage was estimated at $81 billion (2005 USD),[1] nearly triple the damage brought by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.[3]
Hurricane Katrina formed over the Bahamas on August 23, 2005 and crossed southern Florida as a moderate Category 1 hurricane, causing some deaths and flooding there before strengthening rapidly in the Gulf of Mexico. The hurricane strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane over the warm Gulf water, but weakened before making its second landfall as a Category 3 hurricane on the morning of Monday, August 29 in southeast Louisiana. It caused severe destruction along the Gulf coast from central Florida to Texas, much of it due to the storm surge. The most significant number of deaths occurred in New OrleansLouisiana, which flooded as the levee system catastrophically failed, in many cases hours after the storm had moved inland.[4] Eventually 80% of the city and large tracts of neighboring parishes became flooded, and the floodwaters lingered for weeks.[4]However, the worst property damage occurred in coastal areas, such as all Mississippi beachfront towns, which were flooded over 90% in hours, as boats and casino barges rammed buildings, pushing cars and houses inland, with waters reaching 6–12 miles (10–19 km) from the beach.
The hurricane surge protection failures in New Orleans are considered the worst civil engineering disaster in U.S. history[5] and prompted a lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), the designers and builders of the levee system as mandated by the Flood Control Act of 1965. Responsibility for the failures and flooding was laid squarely on the Army Corps in January 2008 by Judge Stanwood Duval, U.S. District Court,[6] but the federal agency could not be held financially liable due to sovereign immunity in the Flood Control Act of 1928. There was also an investigation of the responses from federal, state and local governments, resulting in the resignation of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) directorMichael D. Brown, and of New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Eddie Compass.
Several agencies including the United States Coast Guard (USCG), National Hurricane Center (NHC), and National Weather Service (NWS) were commended for their actions. They provided accurate hurricane weather tracking forecasts with sufficient lead time.[7]

GOOD NIGHT BEVERYBODY....

Synopsis

Diego Armando Maradona was born on October 30, 1960, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Maradona led club teams to championships in Argentina, Italy and Spain, and famously starred for the Argentinean team that won the 1986 World Cup. However, the soccer legend's career was marred by a pair of high-profile suspensions for drug use, and he has often battled health problems in retirement.

QUOTES

"[The goal was scored] a little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God."
(Regarding his controversial handball-goal at the 1986 World Cup.)
– Diego Maradona

Childhood

Diego Armando Maradona was born on October 30, 1960, in Villa Fiorito, a province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The fifth of eight children raised by Diego Sr. and Doña Tota, Maradona grew up in a poor but close-knit household. He received his first soccer ball as a gift at age 3 and quickly became devoted to the game.

At 10, Maradona joined Los Cebollitas, a youth team of Argentinos Juniors, one of the biggest clubs in Argentina. Showing his prodigious ability at an early age, Maradona led Los Cebollitas to an incredible 136-game unbeaten streak. He made his professional debut for the senior team shortly before his 16th birthday.

Professional Career

A short but fearless midfielder renowned for his ability to create scoring chances for himself and others, Maradona led club teams to championships in Argentina, Italy and Spain.

The pinnacle of his career came as a member of the Argentinean national team that won the 1986 World Cup. His performance there included two memorable goals in a quarter-final victory over England: The first was scored illegally with his left hand, which Maradona later claimed was the work of "the hand of God"; the second required no supernatural help, other than an otherworldly ability to dribble past an onslaught of defenders to find the back of the net. Altogether, Maradona played in four World Cups, and scored an impressive 34 goals in 91 international appearances for Argentina.

Despite his unquestioned brilliance on the pitch, the emotional Maradona became equally well known as a highly controversial figure. He became addicted to cocaine while playing in Spain in the 1980s and received a 15-month suspension after testing positive for the substance in 1991. Maradona endured another high-profile suspension three years later, this time for testing positive for ephedrine during the World Cup.

Maradona spent the twilight of his playing career in his home country, his physical skills diminished by mounting injuries and years of hard living. He announced his retirement on the eve of his birthday in 1997.

Post-Playing Career

The problems that plagued Maradona later in his playing career continued after his retirement. He was hospitalized for heart problems in 2000 and 2004, the second time requiring the use of a respirator to breathe properly. The following year he underwent gastric-bypass surgery to help stem his obesity.

An internet poll conducted by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association named Maradona the top player of the 20th century, but even that event was marked by controversy. Maradona chafed when a special panel was created to ensure that Pelé would be jointly honored, and then refused to share the stage with the Brazilian legend.
