It's Raining Bonanza for Indian Flyers

It's Raining Bonanza for Indian Flyers
New Delhi: It's raining bonanza for domestic and international air travellers, with several Indian and foreign carriers offering flash sales and discounts to attract the growing number of Indian flyers.
The latest in the list is British Airways which announced a flash one-day sale today, offering massive discount of up to 90 per cent on return tickets between Mumbai and London to commemorate nine decades of its India operations.
Under the offer, the lowest-priced Mumbai-London return ticket would start at Rs. 40,252 for economy travel in the month of October this year, the airline said in a statement.
The flash sale came weeks after the prominent British carrier came out with a discount offer of up to 50 per cent on flights from India to select destinations in the UK, the USA, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean. This offer is valid for sale till September 30.
Earlier this week, Qatar Airways and Singaporean budget carrier Tigerair had also announced massive limited-period discounts hoping to corner a share of the Indian travel market.
While Tigerair offered a special one-way base fare of Rs. 10 only to Singapore for Indian passengers to commemorate completion of its decade-long operations, Qatar Airways launched a global promotional offer of up to 25 per cent savings on tickets to over 140 destinations across the world.
Almost all Indian airlines like SpiceJet, IndiGo, GoAir, Jet Airways and Air India, have been offering discounted fares on domestic sectors almost on a month-to-month basis.
In a bid to take on competition from full-service airlines like Air India and Tata-SIA's proposed Vistara airline, Jet Airways also announced the launch of full services even on its all-economy subsidiary JetKonnect from December in order to consolidate it into a single-brand.
Full service product with complementary meal service would be provided on all domestic flights from December 1, with the buy-on-board concept being discontinued, a Jet statement said.
Low-priced air tickets offered by the Indian airlines seem to have had an effect, with the number of passengers flown by them in August growing by more than 8.3 per cent compared to July this year, official data has shown

Ancient sturgeon in China's Yangtze 'nearly extinct'

The Chinese sturgeon, thought to have existed for more than 140 million years, is now on the brink of extinction, according to local media.
Xinhua reported that no wild sturgeon reproduced naturally last year in the Yangtze river.
It was the first time since researchers began recording levels 32 years ago.
Chinese researches say the fall is due to rising levels of pollution in the Yangtze river and the construction of dozens of dams.
Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences also found that no young sturgeons were found swimming along the Yangtze toward the sea during the period they usually do so.
A researcher told Xinhua that in the 1980s, at least several thousand sturgeon could be found in the river. It is estimated only around 100 fish remain.
"Without natural reproduction, the fish population cannot replenish itself. If there are no further steps taken to strengthen conservation, the wild sturgeon faces the danger of extinction," he said.

In recent decades the Chinese authorities have built numerous dams along the 6,300km-long Yangtze river to boost the country's electricity supply. Such moves have drawn criticism of environmental degradation and displacement of villagers.
The WWF says that one of two species of dolphins native to the Yangtze river, the Baiji dolphin, went extinct in 2006 because of declining fish stocks.
The other species, the finless porpoise, is said to be at risk from illegal and intensive fishing practices and pollution. About 1,200 to 1,800 finless porpoises remain in the entire 1.8 million sq km Yangtze basin.

MANILA:  Typhoon Kalmaegi slammed into the northern Philippines on Sunday, causing flash floods and widespread heavy rains as communities braced for landslides and possible storm surges.

The typhoon, packing winds of 160 kilometres (100 miles) per hour, struck the town of Divilacan on the northeastern coast around sundown and moved westward across the main island of Luzon, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

"There has been flooding on the (island) of Mindoro," located south of the area passed over by the typhoon, council spokeswoman Mina Marasigan said.

Although the storm is only directly affecting the northern provinces, it is reinforcing monsoon rains elsewhere in the country.

A ferry carrying more than 100 people hit by huge waves in the archipelago's central waters sank late Saturday as the typhoon approached, killing three and leaving three missing.

There had been no reports of casualties since the typhoon made landfall, Marasigan said, though sea travel in typhoon-affected areas and even airline flights were cancelled as precautionary measures as Kalmagei approached.

Civil defence officials had previously ordered pre-emptive evacuations in at least three towns in the typhoon's path with residents in coastal areas warned of possible storm surges two metres (6.5 feet) tall.

Considering that limited stocks of the Redmi 1S will be available in India, the popular e-commerce giant has revealed that it will limit orders to one phone per registered email ID per sale.
