BJP MLA demands dress code for men on Goa beaches

IndiaToday.in  Panaji, September 2, 2014 | UPDATED 17:02 IST

Goa BJP MLA Michael Lobo on Tuesday demanded dress code for men on the beaches, days after a state minister sought a ban on bikinis at the seaside.
"There should be proper dress code at par with the international standards for men to venture on the beaches. They should be in proper swim wear, and not the shabby undergarments which give a pathetic look. They can wear swimming trunk if they want to," Michael Lobo, legislator from Calangute constituency and BJP's North Goa district president, said.
He said majority of those with such (shabby) attire are domestic tourists who arrive in the state in a jeep, don't book any hotel to stay and venture on the beaches in their undergarments creating nuisance for women.
"They pull foreigners towards them to click picture," he said.
"There should be some control on these stupid tourists or else good tourists will stop visiting," he said, adding that such visitors creating nuisance should be arrested.
Lobo alleged that India Reserve Battalion (IRB) police personnel posted on the beaches were extorting money from businessmen and vendors at the shore.
"There are 300 IRB personnel posted on the beaches but they are busy collecting haftas (extortion money)," he charged.
Last month, state Public Works Department Minister Sudin Dhavalikar had demanded a ban on the bikinis in the state, claiming that women in skimpy dresses might create a law and order problem.

Busted Madhya Pradesh peon Kuldeep Yadav had assets worth Rs 3 crore

IndiaToday.in  New Delhi, September 2, 2014 | UPDATED 19:26 IST

He is perhaps the richest peon in the country. During raids conducted by the Madhya Pradesh Police at three of his six palatial homes in Gwalior revealed assets worth over Rs 3 crore, according to reports in a leading news channel.
The raids were conducted at 3 am on Tuesday morning. The anti-corruption police were still counting his assets at the time of revealing the figures.
Kuldeep Yadav, who is in his 40s and accused in a disproportionate asset case, has been a peon at a Cooperative Bank branch in Madhya Pradesh since 1983. He has worked in the bank for 30 years without a single promotion.
His huge assets, now revealed in the raid, can make even top executives in his bank jealous.
The Lokayukta or anti-corruption police have found documents for a duplex bungalow, five big houses, two luxury cars, cash, jewellery, insurance policies worth over 4 lakh, land and bank lockers.
Officials expect Yadav's wealth estimate to rise to above 7 crore by the time the raids are complete on Wednesday.
His assets are almost 200 per cent of his income, the report quoted senior Lokayukta official Surendra Rai Sharma as saying.
The raids were conducted after a tipoff about Yadav's undetected millions.
The accused was out of town when the raid team arrived at his doorstep.
The police said it was remarkable that such corruption went unnoticed for so many years; at a salary that is not more than Rs 20,000 a month, Yadav couldn't possibly have made more than Rs 20 lakh in his years at the bank.
This was another instance when a peon in Madhya Pradesh got busted in a major disproportionate asset case. Three years ago, Narendra Deshmukh was arrested by Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta police for amassing wealth disproportionate to his income.

Modi trying to copy Obama: Amarinder on Teachers' Day move

PTI  Chandigarh, September 2, 2014 | UPDATED 18:38 IST

Congress leader Amarinder SinghCongress leader Amarinder SinghSenior Congress leader Amarinder Singh on Tuesday took a dig at Narendra Modi over his planned interaction with school children on Teachers' Day and said the Prime Minister was "indiscriminately trying to copy" US President Barack Obama in almost everything the latter does.
"It is strange Modi shall be addressing students and not the teachers on Teachers' Day," Singh, who is the Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, said in a statement here.
He said the US President addressed the students of his country on September 8, 2009 and now "Mr Modi is trying to copy the same".
"He (Modi) is trying to copy Obama in utter haste and hurry," Singh, who represents Amritsar in Lok Sabha, said.
"...otherwise he should ideally be addressing teachers on Teachers' Day and not the students for whom he could always choose some other occasion," he said.
The Congress leader said like in the US all powers are vested with the President, "Modi is trying to do the same despite India being a parliamentary democracy".
"The way he has assumed all the powers in himself whether deciding on foreign policy matters or those related to the Home Ministry, Modi has already hinted adequately that he wants to function like the head of a Presidential form of a government than like a Prime Minister who is supposed to share power with his cabinet with collective responsibility," he said.
On Teachers' Day, in a first-of-its-kind exercise to reach out to students, Modi will give a pep-talk to about 1,000 selected students at the Manekshaw Auditorium in Delhi and interact with them, taking some questions through a video conferencing facility. The telecast would start at 3 PM and will continue up to 4:45 pm.
The programme would be beamed live to over 18 lakh government and private schools in the country via all Doordarshan and education channels

LIVE SCORE! India vs England: 4th ODI, Edgbaston

IndiaToday.in  New Delhi, September 2, 2014 | UPDATED 21:32 IST

Bhuvneshwar KumarIndia won the toss and elected to field first against England
Welcome to the LIVE coverage of the 4th ODI between India and England from the Edgbaston cricket ground in Birmingham. Scorecard

Team India defeated lacklustre England by nine wicket to win the 4th ODI and also the five-match series 3-0. It was one-way traffic all the way. After the bowlers skittled the visitors out for the third time in as many games, Rahane and Dhawan combined well to set up India's best partnership outside the sub-continent in 5 years. They built the innings steadily by knocking the ball around into the gaps before cranking up to top gear. While, Rahane relied more on timing and power, it was more brawn from Dhawan, who got to his first fifty of this tour. Jinks, guilty of slicing a full toss to extra-cover, was unfortunate to have not seen his side through to the finish line. Dhawan landed the winning blow, inside 31 overs to trigger wild celebrations in the Indian camp. The English bowlers looked out of sorts. Finn was lightyears away from the bowler, who burst onto the international stage with scorching pace. Even more glaring was Anderson going wicket-less for the third successive time.
Shikhar Dhawan is all smiles as he misses out on his 6th ODI ton by a mere three runs. Virat Kohli walks up and congratulates him. On the contrary, the English camp resembles a disgruntled group. What an emphatic win from India. I guess, it can't get better than this.
STAT UPDATE: It has been 8,808 days since India won a bilateral series in England. India's team director, Ravi Shastri was their opener then. Nelson Mandela was just released from prison while Sanju Samson was not even born.

Japan announces 3.5 trillion yen investment to India
Tokyo: Japan on Monday announced public-private investment of 3.5 trillion yen (Rs.2.03 trillion) in India.

India and Japan held official talks Monday in the third day of Prime Minister Narendra Mdoi's five-day sojourn to Japan.

'3.5 trillion yen of public & private investment from Japan to India in 5 year period under India-Japan Investment Promotion Partnership,' Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin tweeted.

He said Japan has offered to provide India financial, technical and operational support to introduce 'Shinkansen' (bullet train) system.

In defence, Akbaruddin said Japan would remove six of India's space and defence-related entities from Japan's foreign fund user list.

He said the two countries are keen on student exchange programmes.

New Delhi: The two-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by T K Thakur has come down heavily on chief minister Oommen Chandy in the palmolein case and observed, would it not be right for a well known agency like the CBI to probe the case. The court flayed Chandy when it was hearing a petition filed by opposition leader V S Achuthanandhan wanting to make Chandy an accused and demanded a special probe. The court asked senior counsel V Giri, representing Kerala, whether justice would be done if the case is probed by a police team coming under the chief minister. The court also asked if the chief minister had withdrawn the case for his personal gains?

The Congress government had decided to withdraw the palmolein import case last year and this was petitioned by opposition leader V S Achuthanandhan who moved the HC. The govt had imported palmolein with the knowledge of Oommen Chandy when Chandy was the finance minister and hence his role should be probed, VS said. But the HC rejected VS plea and subsequently he approached the Supreme Court. Adv Satish appeared for VS. Last May, the SC had sought more details on the case and had also given more time for VS to fetch the details.
